What’s on in Cape Town this month

It’s official: Spring has sprung! September brings with it longer, warmer evenings, clear skies, and of course, an exciting calendar of events. Here’s our top pick of springtime festivals and events, so mark them down in your calendar, get your hands on tickets, and get ready to celebrate!

The Chocolate Festival is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever this year. The event takes place at The Woodmill in Stellenbosch. The festival will feature oodles of chocolates, macaroons, decadent chocolate brownies, indulgent donuts, ice-creams, licorice, marshmallows, candyfloss, and special handcrafted products from artisanal chocolatiers.

The Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show displays more than 400 species of freshly picked wildflowers, many of which grow nowhere else in the world. The blooms are artfully arranged under one roof, illustrating the natural beauty of the Cederberg. To all wildflower enthusiasts – Clanwilliam cordially invites you to frolic in the flowers and view the wildflower displays. This year’s theme is Harmony.

The Open Book Festival is brought to you by the Book Lounge and the Fugard Theatre. The festival offers a world-class selection of book launches, panel discussions, workshops, masterclasses, readings, performances and much more. Venues for the festival event include the Fugard Theatre, District Six Homecoming Centre, and The Book Lounge.

The first sip of spring will be on offer at the first-ever Canal Walk Gin Fest, taking place over two daysthis month. All the best gin brands will be under one roof, with live entertainment from South Africa’s local talent and DJ’s.

When: 6–7 September

The Grape Escape Wine Festival at The Vineyard Hotel in September this year. This unusual festival will give wine-lovers the opportunity to taste wines from 40 of the country’s top producers. Delicious snacks will be served with the wine throughout the evening.

The SA Innovation Summit invites you to its 12th annual Summit from this month. Top entrepreneurs, innovators, thought-leaders, policymakers, inventors, and investors will converge to witness the very best of African innovation.

When: 11 – 13 September

The Cape Town Marathon is a unique annual run that takes place annually in spring. Runners of all levels are welcome to participate in Africa’s only IAAF Gold Label status marathon. The event caters to all types of runners. The spectacular route takes in the Mother City’s  natural beauty as well as some of the top attractions.

When: 14 – 15 September

Bid farewell to the Winter blues and swing into Spring by heading off to the picture-perfect Franschhoek Wine Valley over the weekend of 14 and 15 September for this year’s Franschhoek Uncorked Festival. What better excuse to explore one of South Africa’s premier wine destinations, whilst uncovering a fine selection of wine gems from the Franschhoek Vignerons.

Join the fun at Nantes Park this month to raise funds for our main Cansa Relay for Life event. The evet aims to celebrate, remember, and fight back with our survivors. They invite all teams, families, organizations, clubs, churches, and schools to come along.

Noble Vice, the boutique wine and food festival, returns to the Old Biscuit Mill this month. Six award-winnig chefs and 30 hand-picked winemakers come together to create an unrivalled tasting experience.

The Hermanus Whale Festival, the only Enviro-Arts festival in South Africa, is held annually to celebrate the return of the Southern Right whales to the waters of Walkerbay, Hermanus. These gentle giants are the main attraction, but there is loads to do, eat, and drink, from live music to vintage cars.

The !Khwa ttu Heritage Festival is a unique family-friendly event and is the perfect way to kick off the school holidays which coincides with the Cape West Coast flower season. !Khwa ttu is hosting its 3rd annual Heritage Festival during the long weekend, 21 to 24 September. This award-winning Heritage Centre is located a short one hour drive from Cape Town’s CBD on the West Coast Way.
